A Course In Miracles Lesson 23

I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts.

🌿 I once believed escape meant changing my circumstances—my surroundings, my job, my record, my outcome. But what I’m learning now is that the world I want to escape from is sustained by the way I think about it.

Attack thoughts don’t always look harsh. In fact, they often look safe, protective, reasonable—even responsible. I get defensive. I get tense. And I call it being realistic. But that tension is not the peace I am searching for.

Especially in re-entry, this shows up quietly. Every time I assume someone is judging my background, I attack my own peace before they ever speak. I brace myself, stay alert, and call it wisdom—while reinforcing the very world I say I want to leave behind.

I make the world seem aggressive through my thinking, then justify my defensiveness. ACIM doesn’t ask me to fight these thoughts or fix them. It simply invites me to notice that attack thoughts keep me locked inside the world they describe.

All it takes to loosen the grip is willingness.

Escape isn’t dramatic.

It’s quiet.

It happens the moment I stop insisting my judgments are necessary.

I don’t need to get this right.

I only need to pause.

That pause is freedom.

Instead of fighting or fixing these thoughts, I acknowledge them, then consciously let them go. The moment I stop insisting my judgments are essential, the grip of fear loosens. It's a quiet process, not dramatic, but incredibly powerful. By giving up attack thoughts, I begin to see the world not as aggressive, but as neutral—my perceptions no longer coloring reality with vengeance or fear. The Workbook instructions suggest multiple practice periods throughout the day, repeating the core idea and searching the mind for attack thoughts to release. This practice helps to identify both attacks on others and on oneself since both stem from the same root. I’ve noticed that this consistent, gentle self-observation cultivates willingness, which Lesson 23 points out is all it takes to transform my experience. Ultimately, this journey feels like reclaiming peace by accepting that the world I see is an image I've made. When I let go of the cause (attack thoughts), the world transforms naturally. This insight encourages compassion toward myself and others, recognizing that beneath judgments lies a shared desire for love and peace. The lesson's call to pause rather than react has helped me embrace moments of tension without losing my calm, making the concept of escape less about running away and more about learning to rest peacefully in the present moment.
