A Course In Miracles Lesson 133

I notice how quickly I treat what I want as if it must have value.

Lesson 133

I will not value what is valueless.

🌿 Something attracts my attention

and it immediately feels important.

Worth pursuing.

Worth deciding about.

Worth holding onto.

That sense of value comes first.

The evaluation comes after.

So I move toward it

before I’ve really questioned what it gives me.

That pattern repeats in different forms.

What looks like choice

is often just reinforcement of what already feels important.

The Course interrupts that.

Not by removing choice,

but by clarifying what choice actually is.

There are not endless meaningful options.

There are two directions.

What leads to something real,

and what doesn’t.

Everything else is variation.

That simplifies the decision

but also removes the illusion that everything has equal weight.

If something does not last,

if it creates tension,

if it depends on comparison or loss,

then it doesn’t hold value in the way I think it does.

That’s not judgment.

It’s clarity.

Because what I value determines what I experience.

If I keep assigning value to what doesn’t hold it,

then I keep reinforcing the same cycle.

That’s why it feels like I’m choosing,

but not actually getting anywhere different.

Today I’m paying attention to what I’m treating as important

before I move toward it.

Not rejecting it automatically.

But not assuming its value either.

Letting that question come before the decision.

I will not value what is valueless.

It confronts the way we instinctively assign importance to things that capture our attention but may not truly benefit us in the long term. Often, we move toward what appears attractive before deeply questioning its real value, which can trap us in repetitive cycles of disappointment. What stands out in this lesson is the reminder that there are essentially only two meaningful paths to choose from: one leading to what is true and lasting, and the other to illusions that fade or cause tension. Recognizing this has helped me simplify overwhelming decisions in daily life, clarifying that not all options carry equal weight. This teaching also emphasizes that temporary pleasures or achievements dependent on comparison or loss hold no real value. Understanding this has allowed me to pause and evaluate what I truly desire — differentiating between fleeting satisfactions and authentic fulfillment. It’s not about rejecting desires outright but about bringing honest clarity to what I am valuing before committing to it. Implementing this mindset shift requires patience and practice. For instance, when faced with a decision that initially feels urgent or attractive, I remind myself to question the lasting impact of that choice and whether it aligns with my deeper wellbeing. This helps me avoid confusing ego-driven goals with genuine needs, reducing guilt and internal conflict. Overall, embracing the clarity offered by Lesson 133 leads to a more mindful experience of choice. It empowers us to move toward what supports our true self rather than perpetuating cycles of illusions. With regular practice, you too can experience the freedom that comes from valuing only what is real and meaningful.
